This is the first study to examine the ethical nature of patient influence on social media using in-depth interviews. Spending on social media marketing is expected to reach $16.4 billion in 2022; yet, there is limited understanding of patient influencers and the ethical nature of their work. Patient influencers serve in a unique role of both patient and information liaison and attempt to establish trust with their online followers. This role positions them as an ideal candidate to understand ethics of care. The current findings suggest that influencers exhibit moral maturity, engage in honest and respectful communication, exhibit sensitivity when information sharing, feel a sense of responsibility and obligation toward other patients, and serve as a connection to help build a bridge of understanding beyond the dyadic relationship of care and among a wide network of stakeholders.
